Be a finisher

Ten years ago, I was a scattered creative - chasing music, juggling projects, starting all kinds of things but finishing little.

Today, the biggest difference is simple: I usually finish what I start.

While recording the audio reflections for the challenge yesterday, I was struck by something in the "completion mindset" module.

You only grow through finishing.

Unfinished projects leave you with shame, frustration, and maybe boredom. But completion? That's where the real learning happens.

There are so many things you can learn from your finished projects: How accurate were your time estimates? What did the market/client actually want?Where could you have improved? What would you do differently next time?

These lessons compound. Every completed project fills your toolbox with knowledge for the next one.

I see this especially in renovation and construction - each finished project makes you exponentially more able to tackle the next.

The only way to build real expertise is to be a finisher.

I came across this and tweeted about it. This is fashion photographer Richard Avendon's apartment photographed in 2004 by Andrew Moore for New York Magazine.

I absolutely love the way this looks. It's a bit chaotic. But in that perfect way that makes you want to explore and poke around.

This apartment strikes me as very timeless. The blend of modern minimalist shelving & windows with the traditional craftsmanship of the bed, table and chairs is a nice mixture.

Is there a theme? I think the theme is what Richard was interested in. Which looks like books, photography, nice antique furniture, plants, the color red, and cooking.

This is more personal style than design. Little consideration for time period or trends.

If you want to create a one of a kind space, obsessively pursue and collect what you're interested in.

The personality is what makes it timeless.
