Fall feelings
It's still hot, but we are fast approaching some seasonal change. Here are three things I am seeing more of in design that also scream Fall:
natural materials on exteriors
Increasingly, I'm seeing wood, stone and brick being used as exterior siding materials (at least in residential). While these are certainly not as inexpensive as hardie plank and other similar products, they really do elevate a home and if I were building spec or renovating a higher end product, I'd opt for something like this.
A custom by Stone Ridge Builders in Nashville
For our first Arrington Woods spec home, we're looking at stone and wood for siding. I'm also working on a project in Fredericksburg TX called Grand Oaks Ranch where we're in the process of designing a series of grain silo homes around a small lake on the grounds of a farm. Trying to use wood and natural stone everywhere we can.
Here is the first phase..a wedding ceremony area with this stone wall. Love how this came out. The speckled look is so cool and it matches the 100 year old farm house on the property.
I haven't seen much of it, but if you just did a little slightly creative brick work on the front facade of a house, it could be so striking. This is a beautiful cafe in Nashville that exemplifies interesting brick. Love the white and green glazed brick.
If you were doing a brick building, just trimming your windows or doors like this could be so exceptional. Nobody does it, but they should.
lantern inspired lights
More and more in design, it seems the pendulum is swinging hard away from modern minimalism towards more cottage & medieval/Hollywood regency inspired design. Hence, we're seeing things that would be appropriate in those settings. Like lantern inspired lights. Like this one from Rejuvenation.
arts & crafts inspired textiles
Like these gorgeous shower curtains from West Elm. So rich and invigorating. You could not buy this kind of thing almost anywhere two years ago and I'm so glad it's here.
What else are you seeing that makes you feel Fall? Maybe darker earth and jewel tones? More traditional tile work? To me, Fall is all about creating spaces that feel cozy and sophisticated. But also attempt, however challenging, to be timeless.
